Smart Meters are really dumb and very expensive: Martiniuk
Cambridge – Ontario Residents may not be aware that Premier McGuinty has sold them a very expensive and frivolous appliance for their home.
So-called Smart Meters, designed to conserve energy, will cost each homeowner $700.54, according to an article this week by Parker Gallant in the Financial Post. Provincewide, the cost of the initiative is an estimated $2.8-billion.
“Premier McGuinty, through Ontario Hydro, forced you to buy an outlandishly-priced hydro meter that tracks the time you use electricity,” said Cambridge MPP Gerry Martiniuk. “So, if you watch TV at 3 a.m., you get a cheaper rate. However, if you do laundry in the middle of the afternoon you will be penalized.”
The cost of the meter will appear as an additional charge on the ever-growing list of expenses on your hydro bill.
“These electrical meters will likely never be used,” Martiniuk said. “Plus, it isn’t very ‘smart’ as it would not permit the sale of homemade electricity by solar or wind to the grid as is permitted in many countries. Obviously the cost of these Smart Meters would have been better spent on decaying delivery infrastructure facilitating the prevention of blackouts.”
