Martiniuk brings back proposal for internet filtering software
Queen’s Park, Toronto – Cambridge MPP Gerry Martiniuk will reintroduce a private member’s bill today that would require internet filtering software to be installed on computers in public libraries and schools.
“My bill, An Act to Protect our Children from Pornography, aims to do one thing and one thing only: protect children from viewing pornography and other harmful material on the internet,” Martiniuk said. “This idea created a lot of interest and support when I first proposed it last year and I look forward to continued dialogue with members of the community.”
Although both the public and Catholic school boards in the Region of Waterloo use filters on computers, it is not required by law. Martiniuk proposed the internet filter legislation after Rob Nickel, a former police officer and internet safety expert, witnessed a patron viewing pornography on a computer at the Cambridge Library.
The bill passed second reading last fall but died on the order paper when the Ontario Legislative Assembly prorogued earlier this year.
