Martiniuk re-introduces bill to assist diabetic children
Queen’s Park, Toronto – Cambridge MPP Gerry Martiniuk will re-introduce a private member’s bill today that would assist elementary school children who suffer from diabetes.
The bill recommends that elementary schools have staff trained in the daily monitoring of blood sugar levels of children who suffer from diabetes. It also calls for trained staff to administer insulin and glucagon when required. The bill protects school staff by prohibiting actions against them arising out of any assistance they would provide.
“I am bringing back this proposed legislation because I believe young children with diabetes need assistance during the school day,” Martiniuk said. “Just as Sabrina’s Law requires treatment of children who suffer from life-threatening allergies, my bill protects the health of children who suffer from diabetes.”
Martiniuk’s private member’s bill was first introduced during the previous session of the Ontario Legislature but was defeated by Liberal members voting unanimously on orders from Premier McGuinty's office.
